    Superintendent's update - November 13, 2019

Parents are our students’ first - and most important - teachers. Engaging, educating and empowering parents to be full-fledged partners in their children’s education is essential for student success.  At LESD we highly value parent engagement. Here are some recent accomplishments in our district.

When I came to Lawndale ten years ago, our district parent advisory meetings had at most five attendees, and recruiting parents was challenging. A model plan for parent engagement began at Anderson Elementary, led by then-Community Liaison Marina Sandoval, in collaboration with Claudia Godoy, District Outreach Specialist. In the 2017-18 school year, Director of Special Projects, Ms. Julie Kane supported the expansion of Family University throughout the district.  Our parents were educated and empowered to participate as true partners in our school district. Family University includes a pathway to increased participation and levels of leadership. As a result, our District Parent Advisory Committee and our District English Learner Advisory Committee are each led by elected officers, and our meeting room is filled to capacity!

At the school level, parents participate in School Site Council (SSC) and the English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC).  SSC is responsible for developing, annually reviewing, and updating the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA), and allocating funds to support programs for students. Each school elects a representative to sit on the District level advisory committee.

Another vital parent organization is our Parent Teacher Association (PTA).  We had an amazing start this school year when we learned that Mark Twain Elementary school was the recipient of the Phoebe Apperson Hearst Award. Each year, the top three PTA Schools of Excellence in the United States are selected to receive this award for outstanding family-school partnership.  This award is the highest honor National PTA offers for family engagement, and Twain is the only school in California to receive this honor!

Parent engagement is directly correlated to higher student outcomes. Our students deserve the best education we can provide, both at home and at school. When staff and parents are partners, we build brighter futures for ALL students!
