    Superintendent's update - october 1, 2019

At LESD we take pride in demonstrating to our community that we are making strides in accomplishing our district goals. This year, we will inaugurate our second makerspace at Smith Elementary school. A makerspace is a is a collaborative work space for making, learning, exploring and sharing. Makerspaces help prepare students with critical 21st century skills in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).  Some of the skills that are learned in a makerspace pertain to electronics, 3d printing, 3D modeling, coding and robotics, among many others. We have plans to open up one new makerspace per year until every elementary school has one. For 21st century skills development to continue after elementary school, each middle school offers a 21st Century Library Media Centers where students can access literary, digital, and technological resources that complement our curriculum and echo the needs of our school community. Preparing our students with the foundational skills that they will need to succeed in the 21st century is vital in our district.

In addition to providing our students with skills to succeed, it is also important that we support actions that ensure access and equity to opportunities. At our board meeting on September 19, 2019 Ms. Rocio Murrillo, Tech Trek Branch School Coordinator, introduced five young women who were selected by Rogers and Addams Middle School teachers to participate in the Tech Trek College Camp due to their interest in STEM. At Tech Trek students explored creating apps, created building models that would withstand earthquakes, and got a deeper look at biomedical science.  The students had a real “college life” experience, facing their fears about being away from home and making friends with similar interests. This experience boosted their confidence and inspired them explore careers in STEM.

In Lawndale, we believe in “access and equity for all” - we proudly provide learning environments that build the foundation for 21st century skills for all students and we encourage young women to pursue their interest in STEM to ensure more girls and women are represented in these fields.
